Afgelopen vrijdag werd gevierd dat Kempenhaeghe en de patiëntenorganisatie Duchenne Parent Project sinds 2008 nauw samenwerken rond het thema 'Duchenne en het Brein'. Hoewel bij Duchenne spierdystrofie de aandacht in de medische wereld vooral uitgaat naar de motorische en lichamelijke achteruitgang en hoe dit proces te vertragen, zijn voor veel ouders juist de vaak voorkomende leer- en gedragsproblemen het grootste probleem in het dagelijkse leven. 

Al ver voor er in andere landen aandacht voor dit onderwerp was, werd het Centrum voor Neurologische Leer- en Ontwikkelingsstoornissen van Kempenhaeghe dankzij de inzet van klinische neuropsycholoog dr. Jos Hendriksen, hèt expertisecentrum op dit terrein en vonden niet alleen veel Duchenne families uit het hele land hun weg naar Kempenhaeghe, maar werd het ook al snel gezien als een internationaal gerespecteerd onderzoeksinstituut.  

Als kenniscentrum heeft Kempenhaeghe een grote bijdrage geleverd aan het wetenschappelijk onderzoek en de internationale educatie van artsen, psychologen en families. Deze samenwerking heeft inmiddels geresulteerd in 34 internationale publicaties op het gebied van leren en gedrag bij Duchenne. Het Duchenne Parent Project (o.a. Elizabeth Vroom en Mirjam Franken) heeft zich vanaf het begin intensief ingezet voor deze samenwerking en heeft deze activiteiten praktisch en ook financieel gesteund. Verder werkt Kempenhaeghe sinds 2014 in het Duchenne Centrum Nederland op nationaal gebied samen met Leiden UMC, Radboud UMC en Duchenne Parent Project aan verbetering van zorg en wetenschap in Nederland.  

Naast gezamenlijke activiteiten zoals de internationale film 'Duchenne with a  Future: the power to live', het handboek 'de psychologie van Duchenne'  (inmiddels vertaald in 8 talen), en het landelijke congres 'Duchenne en het Brein' in 2018 in Heeze op locatie Kempenhaeghe, werkt Kempenhaeghe momenteel ook samen met zes andere Europese onderzoeksinstituten en de internationale patiëntenorganisatie World Duchenne Organization binnen het door de EU gesubsidieerde project BIND. BIND is een grootschalig Europees project naar Brain involvement in Dystrophinopathies: de grootste internationale studie tot op heden op dit terrein die in 2024 afgerond wordt. In 2020 was het thema van de World Duchenne Awareness Day ‘Duchenne and the Brain’. De dag werd georganiseerd door de World Duchenne Organization met o.a. een online-uitzending rond dit thema waarin dr. Jos Hendriksen een belangrijke rol speelde.

 Het multidisciplinaire behandelteam van het Centrum voor Neurologische Leer- en Ontwikkelingsstoornissen van Kempenhaeghe heeft inmiddels ook internationale expertise op gebied van gebruik en effectiviteit van psychofarmaca bij Duchenne, hetgeen tot nog toe een onbekend terrein was.  De samenwerking met Maastricht UMC kinderneurologie (dr. S. Klinkenberg) en de Koraalgroep kinderpsychiatrie (dr. P. Collin) is essentieel voor de diagnostiek en behandeling van brein gerelateerde nevendiagnoses. Afgelopen jaar publiceerde de onderzoeksgroep samen met UZ Leuven de eerste uitgebreide publicatie naar het effect van psychofarmaca bij Duchenne, met veelbelovende resultaten.

Duchenne Parent Project is dankbaar dat Kempenhaeghe zich ook in de toekomst in zal zetten voor Duchenne Spierdystrofie, zowel op het terrein van onderzoek, innovatie, educatie en de zorg aan patiënten. Duchenne Parent Project kijkt uit om in de toekomst te succesvol blijven samenwerken rondom psychosociale zorg en onderzoek voor en naar Duchenne.

Last Friday it was celebrated that Kempenhaeghe and the patient organization Duchenne Parent Project have been working closely together since 2008 on the theme 'Duchenne and the Brain'. Although in Duchenne muscular dystrophy the medical world focuses mainly on motor and physical deterioration and how to slow down the progression, for many parents it is the often the learning and behavioral problems that are the biggest problem in daily life. Long before attention was paid to this subject in other countries, the Center for Neurological Learning and Development Disorders of Kempenhaeghe became the center of expertise in this field thanks to the efforts of Clinical neuropsychologist Dr. Jos Hendriksen and not only found many Duchenne families from the whole country their way to Kempenhaeghe, but it was also soon seen as an internationally recognized research institute.

As a knowledge center, Kempenhaeghe has made a major contribution to scientific research and international education of doctors, psychologists, and families. This collaboration has now resulted in 34 international publications in the field of learning and behavior related to Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The Duchenne Parent Project (including Elizabeth Vroom and Mirjam Franken) has been intensively committed to this collaboration from the start and has supported these activities practically and financially. Since 2014, Kempenhaeghe has also been working nationally at the Duchenne Center Netherlands with Leiden UMC, Radboud UMC and Duchenne Parent Project to improve care and science in the Netherlands.

In addition to exciting activities such as the international film 'Duchenne with a Future: the power to live', the handbook 'Duchenne Psychology' (now translated into 8 languages), and the national conference 'Duchenne and the Brain' in 2018 in Heeze at Kempenhaeghe location, Kempenhaeghe is currently also collaborating with six other European research institutes and the international patient organization World Duchenne Organization within the EU-subsidized BIND project. BIND is a large-scale European project on brain involvement in dystrophinopathies: the largest international study to date in this field, which will be completed in 2024. In 2020, the theme of World Duchenne Awareness Day was 'Duchenne and the Brain'. The day was organized by the World Duchenne Organization, including an online broadcast on this theme in which Dr. Jos Hendriksen played an important role.

The multidisciplinary treatment team of the Kempenhaeghe Center for Neurological Learning and Development Disorders now also has international expertise in the field of use and effectiveness of psychotropic drugs in Duchenne, which was previously unknown territory. The collaboration with Maastricht UMC child neurology (Dr. S. Klinkenberg) and the Koraalgroep child psychiatry (Dr. P. Collin) is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of brain-related secondary diagnoses. Last year, the research group, together with UZ Leuven, produced the first extensive publication on the effect of psychotropic drugs on Duchenne, with successful results.

Duchenne Parent Project is grateful that Kempenhaeghe will continue to commit to Duchenne muscular dystrophy in the future, both in the areas of research, innovation, education and patient care. Duchenne Parent Project looks forward to continuing to successfully collaborate in the future on psychosocial care and research for and into Duchenne.
